Bike around the Oslo Fjord

Arrival in Oslo

Train to Drammen 
Bike Drammen - Horten, 55 km

You start by taking the train from Oslo Central Station to Drammen. You bring the bikes with you on the train. From there you head south towards the fjord at Sande. Drammen is a busy city, so you must expect some traffic through the city center. From the community of Sande, you continue north on the old main road along the Oslo Fjord. Holmestrand is a nice place for lunch with a view of the fjord and the marina. From Holmestrand, you follow secondary roads and/or trails north towards Horten. In Horten, we recommend a stroll around the old naval base, Karljohansvern.

Horten - Sandefjord, 57 km

From Horten to Sandefjord, you follow the Norwegian National Cycle Route 1, the coastal route. This is part of EuroVelo 12, North Sea Cycle Route. The route is well signposted. you follow Norwegian national cycle route 1. The route follows forest paths along the coast. You pass the Midgard Viking Centre. In charming Åsgårdstrand, you cycle past Edvard Munch's summer house, which is often open to visitors. Outside Sandefjord, you pass the Gokstad ship burial ground. The Gokstad ship is now at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. A copy is built in Tønsberg, Norway's oldest city.

Boat to Strömstad 
Bike Strömstad - Fredrikstad, 60 km

The Color Line ship departs from Sandefjord at 10:00 and arrives in Strømstad at 12:30. 

The road from Strømstad to Fredrikstad runs inland. You cycle through woods and farmland on good roads with little traffic. In these areas, you find many historic sights and Norway's largest concentration of rock carvings from the Nordic Bronze Age, 1700 - 500 BC. In Fredrikstad, we recommend a visit to the charming Old Town.

Fredrikstad - Moss, 58 km

From Fredrikstad, you follow Norwegian national cycle route 1. Cycle Route. The route is well signposted. You cycle alternately through a lush cultural landscape and out by the coast with beaches and rocky shores. You can make nice detours along the way.

Moss - Oslo, 76 km

You continue north. Between Son and Hvitsten, the route runs inland, through forests and cultural landscapes. Continue via the small coastal pearl Hvitsten. Possible detour to Ramme, where Edvard Munch's house often is open to the public. Slightly hilly landscape towards the sea at Drøbak, where the Oslo fjord is at its narrowest. (From here there is a boat to Aker Brygge in Oslo). After passing a nice lake, the road turns towards the sea and follows the coast past several nice beaches. The route is well-signposted and easy to find when you approach Oslo. The tour ends outside the National Library, Oslo Opera House and Oslo Central Station.

Shortcut: You can go by boat from Son or Drøbak to Aker Brygge in Oslo. The boat departs from Son at 11:30 and from Drøbak at 12:40 (limited space for bicycles).
